Because if your last real experience with AI was pasting a paragraph into ChatGPT or Copilot and getting a slightly-better paragraph back, I need you to forget that for the next five minutes.

What I'm about to describe didn't exist a year ago. It didn't exist eight months ago. It launched on January 12, 2026. I've been using it, obsessively, every single day since. Running my actual work through it: regulatory scans, report reviews, gap analyses, the boring repetitive stuff that eats a Tuesday.

The result: I get more than 9 hours back every week. Not because I found a shortcut. Because I built my SustainOS, my operation system using Claude cowork.

But first things first. Before we even explain what cowork is. Why must you pay attention now? Why am I urging sustainability professionals to give cowork their full attention, beyond the fact that it's already saved me more than 9 hours a week?

I've got a real argument for you, not a vibe. Let me walk you through it.

Number one: it's not hype.

I know, everyone's talking about AI, everyone's throwing keywords around to grab your attention. Cowork has moved past that stage. It's at a level of maturity where investing your time in it is a safe bet, not a gamble. Let me show you why.

Claude Cowork launched in January 2026. Less than eight months ago. It wasn't built for developers. It was built for people exactly like you and me: knowledge workers who don't want to touch a terminal, who just want to describe an outcome and get real work back.

I know "new AI thing, act now" is a sentence you've been trained to ignore. Fair. So look at what's happened since, not what I'm telling you to believe.

Microsoft didn't build a competitor. They integrated the same technology behind Claude Cowork directly into Microsoft 365 Copilot. OpenAI, the other major lab, shipped their own version in July, ChatGPT Work. That's not a trend I'm predicting. That's the future of knowledge work. We all know AI is powerful but has it’s flows, well cowork did manage to tackle many of those, we will cover those in this series so stay tuned.

One reason and this for sustainability managers I speak to every day and the most common issue they face “We are trapped inside of copilot” well not any more. Cowork is already live inside your company's Microsoft 365, if your IT department has switched it on. Most haven't yet, it's metered, billed per task, and most organizations are still figuring out the cost model and the governance around it. That conversation is happening right now, without you in the room. I've been telling you this for weeks now, check my previous article about it and go nag your IT team about it.

Therefore, learning how to use cowork, is not a skill that apply to one provider anymore, it does apply to Claude, GPT and Copilot. You better get started.

But Cowork is an agent, meaning it works toward a goal. You describe the outcome, it plans multiple steps (you can see the plan on the below screenshot top right corner), executes these steps one by one, and get back with final outcome based on the plan provided.

And here's the shift that actually matters: it's not about the prompt anymore. It's about the system behind the prompt. Your folder structure. A file called CLAUDE.md that tells it who you are and how you work. Skills that encode a process you've done a hundred times, so you never have to explain it again. Plugins that bundle several skills into a full workflow.
